Tri-Phase Group was retained by an industrial client to provide sulfuric acid tank demolition. The industrial client is one of the largest producers in Canada of Sulfuric Acid which, when highly concentrated, is a colorless liquid that releases fumes and is called fuming sulfuric acid or Oleum. They had two sulfuric acid tanks that they no longer required. The first tank was approximately 35 feet high and 7 feet in diameter. The second tank was approximately 45 feet high and 8 feet in diameter. Tri-Phase had to build an extensive 315-degree scaffolding system with scaffold decking approximately 6 feet high around each tank. The tanks were comprised of interior clay brick and the exterior was made of steel sheeting. Due to the fumes from the tanks, Tri-Phase had to ensure to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which included full-face respirators with dual P-100/Acid cartridges, chemical resistant suits, chemical and cut resistant coated gloves and boot coverings. A separate emergency/decontamination shower system was provided to ensure proper decontamination at the end of each shift and in case of an emergency. Tri-Phase systematically began to disassemble the sulfuric tanks starting from the top and utilized cranes to remove the tank pieces that were removed. Tri-Phase ensured all material was disposed of as hazardous waste due to the high concentration of the acid.
